Special Program on Saturday, September 24th at 2:30 pm

Presented by Jonathan P. Clancy, Ph.D.

Utility—Simplicity—Beauty: Design and The Arts and Crafts Interior

In the Fall of 1901, Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman magazine warned readers against the decadence of historical revival styles and argued instead for home furnishings that were useful, simple, and beautiful. More than simply an argument for purchasing his furniture, Stickley promoted a complete vision of interior design that was restful, sober, and restrained. Designed to calm the weary masses returning from an increasingly industrial workplace, the Arts and Crafts movement sought to provide a sense of stability and comfort through good design, restful interiors, and a connection to the natural world. These principles, evident throughout the furniture, ceramics, and textiles from the period are essential to understanding the history of the movement and help explain its continued relevance today.

Dr. Jonathan Clancy is Director of the American Fine and Decorative Art Program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. His publications include Beauty in Common Things: American Arts and Crafts Pottery from the Two Red Roses Collection, Warman’s Rookwood Pottery, as well as articles on Marblehead pottery and the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. He is presently working with the Redwood Library in Newport, Rhode Island preparing a catalog of their fine art collection.
