Volunteer Opportunities at the Historical Society of Princeton

Walking Tour Guides:

A dedicated group of volunteers serve the Historical Society of Princeton as walking tour guides. HSP’s guides lead the public on two-hour walking tours of Princeton every Sunday at 2pm. Our guides also give tours to private groups other times during the week, particularly in the spring and summer. Walking tours visit numerous historic sites on the Princeton University campus and in downtown Princeton. There is also opportunity to guide specific theme tours; examples include our women in Princeton history tour or the Albert E. Hinds Walking Tour: African-American Life in Princeton
New guides are always needed.  If you have great communication skills, love meeting new people, want to learn and talk about Princeton’s history and are at least college-age, then please let us know about your interest in being a guide.
Application and training process: First, take a Sunday walking tour. No reservations are necessary. Buy your ticket and meet your guide at 2pm at Bainbridge House, 158 Nassau Street. Tell your guide about your interest in becoming a guide, too. If you’re still interested after taking the tour, then call or email Jeanette Cafaro, 609-921-6784 or jeanette@princetonhistory.org. She’ll make arrangements for you to meet with HSP staff to receive the walking tour guide manual and to learn more about the program and HSP. After you study the manual and feel comfortable with the material, then you lead HSP’s curator on a trial tour. If all goes well, then you’re an official HSP walking tour guide.
